Prevention and Public Education
Public Fire Safety Prevention and Education has been proven to be the most effective and cost efficient method of reducing not only the number of fires but more importantly, the number of deaths and injuries that results from fires. The Bismarck Fire Department is determined to offer to the citizens of Bismarck the latest and most innovative techniques for not only surviving a fire, but to provide them the training and tools to help prevent fires from ever occurring.
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9th falls. This year the theme for Fire Prevention Week is “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years”.
